E-Verify, TO LIVE or DIE…

Because the E-Verify system checks a person’s legal status in the U.S., many immigrants and families are affected economically.[E-Verify should cease to exist]. With such hopes, the new U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services director mentioned a possibility that the program may expire at the end of this month; it will expire unless congress reauthorizes it. Amongst other talks, Biometrics is a possible replacement for E-Verify. Advocates are pushing for reform early next spring. Hopefully, immigration reform enters congress soon and benefits our immigrant population.

UTAH Churches Reject Immigration Law

This past Tuesday an immigration law entered the state of Utah, Senate Bill 81. The law allows policemen to enforce immigration laws. Various religious organizations are not happy with this; ‘Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Protestant leaders’ had previously joined in hopes of a better outcome. The law has been stated to be a ‘symbol of a broken community’ and its repeal has been called for.

Education Immigration Laws

It is important that undocumented students are aware of the laws that affect them as students in the United States. Today, Susan Knight, director of college placement at the Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice in Brooklyn sends undocumented students to the article “Financial Aid and Scholarships for Undocumented Students” [provided by finaid.org]. Chicago Leads Immigration Marches

As reported by WBBM 780, a Chicago News Radio, the people of Chicago and surrounding neighborhoods led immigration marches today [Labor Day 2009]. It was a peaceful demonstration that estimated a crowd of about 900 people. Their main concern and message was the following, "Mr. Obama says it's going to take a year - the legislative process - to get immigration reform. So we want a year without deportations, a year without separation of families, a year without enforcement of a broken system and a broken law." This message has become a national concern for advocates of immigration reform.

The DREAM Act Alive

THE DREAM ACT is a controversial immigration law and hot topic in the political realm of the U.S. The DREAM Act would give undocumented students a chance at attending college and the equal opportunities concerning financial aid, scholarships, etc. While doing some reading today, it was a happy surprise to see a list of individuals and corporations that support the DREAM Act and our population of undocumented students: Microsoft, The College Board, the University of California system, Harvard University President Drew Gilpin Faust and other various education, business, and political officials.
