IMMIGRATION REFORM 2010

With the new year approaching us, in a matter of hours, we are all hoping for a year of change... of opportunities... of growth... While in the political world of the United States, it awaits a long battle with immigration reform. It is now the time to help the families, students and individuals who have been a major contributing factor to this country and society. They add to the diversity that the U.S. lacks, and they provide an insight into what the American Dream is. While many of us don't know what to do, there are various websites and organizations that have been working year round. Many of which, would be glad to inform you on the task. Our representatives, senators, leaders, etc., who have decided to put their names and hands on the various bills filed and to be filed need our support and back-up. I wish everyone a happy and safe new year, and let it be our year of CHANGE

ACT NOW - Support Congressman Gutierrez's Bill

Today, Congressman Luis Gutierrez and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus introduced their immigration reform bill, aptly titled the "CIR ASAP Act." It's the first bill in the 111th' Congress to provide a comprehensive plan, and clearly lays out many of the realistic solutions that we have been pushing for.
Your work has gotten us this far, and Congressman Gutierrez has kept to his commitment. Now it's time for Congress to step up. Tell Congress to support the CIR ASAP Act.
This is a crucial moment for our movement. We must now come together and show why these reforms cannot wait.
The CIR ASAP Act already has over seventy co-sponsors in Congress, but it's going to take all of us working together to make comprehensive immigration reform the law.
This fight isn't about abstract policies or processes. It's about hard-working people who want a fair working environment. It's about families, separated by a bureaucratic system that doesn't work. It's about fixing our broken system and doing what's right.

Thank you for your support,
Rich Stolz
Reform Immigration FOR America

P.S. - Do you have what it takes to be a leader? Are you interested in organizing in your community? Do you want to help fix our nation's broken immigration system? If so, join us in Los Angeles for a Movement Building Training For Immigration Reform.

OPINION: THINGS THAT MAKE ME WANT TO POP!

There are certain things that make me angry... I once wrote that you can only shake a can of soda for so long before it pops. This morning, while in the car with my sister, I was on my way to school listening to the radio. And to my surprise, they were talking about the issue of immigration. The audience was asked to call in and voice their opinions.
This is where it gets interesting. So, a Spanish speaking woman, a U.S. citizen, who is most than likely of Mexican descent, began to voice her racist and prejudice generalizations against immigrants. She was angry because all the immigrants took away the possible jobs that she could have had. She was angry because the "illegal aliens" come and took a job that pays them $5.00 an hour; when she can be having that same exact job and because she is a citizen, she should be getting paid $13.00 an hour. From what I've seen, citizens aren't in the strawberry fields killing their backs and putting up with the heat.
She said that all the "illegal aliens" are dependent on welfare and are stealing the tax payer’s money. In fact, the government designates who that money goes to. And by law, American children should have every right to that money. It is sad to see that in today’s society, people of your own or similar ethnic background can have such mentalities and views. It is embarrassing to point out this lady had a heavy accent, and her English wasn't perfect. She doesn’t have a job because she is probably a fat lazy b**** who can't seem to get her ass up and find a job. And most than likely, with that accent, she is a first generation American, and her parents are and came to this country illegally.
THINGS THAT MAKE ME ANGRY...

IT IS NOW THE TIME!

PUSHING IMMIGRATION REFORM BEYOND THE HALT.

In El Paso Texas, law enforcement and national security officials met this past Tuesday and discussed the immediate need for the U.S. to refocus its current approach on immigration. They said that the U.S. government needs to start focusing on a way to stop the entering of more immigrants in the country and quickly fix the current system by providing a reform law to legalize the current undocumented population.

In today’s current population, an estimated 12 million undocumented people live in the United States. The panel discussed the importance of ending the target on all undocumented individuals, and removing those who are actual violent criminals.

NAACP & OTHERS JOIN THE MOVEMENT

With the end of the Health Care buzz, Immigration lingers around with much heated debate coming its way.
The "Latino-led movement" of immigration, is now joined by other diverse groups. Approaching the 2010 elections, groups of Asian American and Pacific Islanders Congress people, and various groups, such as the NAACP, National Association for Advancement of Colored People join the new face of the immigration movement.
Among other groups are: Caribbean Americans, labor unions, evangelical churches, businesses and law enforcement. All working harder than before, and hoping to fix laws affecting the immigrant community.
At the core of immigration, this issue is not only about Latinos. Immigration in the United States is global, consisting of immigrants from Africa, Asia, Russia, etc.

Sueños Humedos/ Wet Dreams

JUAN CARLOS MACIAS
Macias' art is described, as if the people in his paintings have been pulled out from reality, and their expressions demonstrate something indescribable. His characters seem to not suffer much. Their actions, if any, are every minimal and absurd. As a painter, he can be described as an Expressionist. [Taken from an excerpt by Maria Minera]. Macias studied Architecture and Plastic Arts at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico and Technical Graphic Arts and Painting at Los Angeles Valley College.

What I loved about his art work, is that he transcends indescribable human emotions. Their expressions, or lack of, make us think about what his characters are actually feeling. In his Immigrant Experience series, Juan Carlos provides a painting titled Sueños Humedos/ Wet Dreams. The painting speaks for itself.

COLLEGEBOARD: INSPIRING MINDS

This past spring, the College Board released a report, "Young Lives on Hold: The College Dreams of Undocumented Students." In this 32 page report, you will find a demographic on immigrants, the barriers of attending college for undocumented students, the DREAM Act, among many other topics... This study, "calls for a humane and comprehensive resolution to the legal barriers that hinder undocumented students from going to college and participating fully in society. It promotes the DREAM Act as a bipartisan policy solution that would open the door to college for tens of thousands of students. The College Board is committed to expanding educational opportunities for this segment of our nation's youth, who have the potential to make significant contributions to the economy, democracy, and society in general."

A DREAM DEFERRED... DOES IT EXPLODE?

Recently, while trying to locate a short film on the DREAM ACT to show my viewers, I was having some trouble. However, I came across a wonderful site, http://adreamdeferred.org/. Immediately a smile came to me. Looking at the name of this organization, I smiled knowing that they too associated the DREAM Act with Langston Hughes' poem, A Dream Deferred. Please read the poem and take a look at the short film.

A Dream Deferred
Langston Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

I. THE DREAM ACT

The DREAM ACT was not the original title of the now controversial law. First introduced in 2001 as H.R. 1918 [House of Representatives] and S. 1291 [Senate], and by general title, The Student Adjustment Act.  Our congress men and women to bring this DREAM to the table were Chris Cannon [R-Utah], Howard Berman [D-CA], and one of our own Latinas, Lucille Royal-Allard [D-CA].  Later, what is now nationally known as the DREAM ACT was introduced by Senators Orrin Hatch [R-UT] and Richard [D-IL]. As leaders of our undocumented youth, they placed thousand of students as symbols of the true American Dream.
Every year that the bill has been re-introduced into either government office, there has been controversy due to its connection to immigration and the possibility of a new surge of immigrants.
In March 26, 2009, the bill was re-introduced by various representatives. Representatives from states that included but are not limited to: Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Florida, Vermont, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and California. As of current date, 105 House Representatives and 32 Senators co-sponsor the DREAM ACT.
With a general idea of what the DREAM ACT is… it would give immigrant students provisional residency and the opportunity to pursue higher education.
It is important that we urge our representatives and senators to support the DREAM ACT. Many of the typical things we can do are: write letters, call their offices, and any other possibilities. Let’s give hope to our students and let their DREAMS be alive.

LOU DOBBS LEAVES IMMEDIATELY!

With a surprising retirement by Lou Dobbs, CNN employee [neither journalist nor reporter], there has been questions and speculations about such sudden action.

As reported by the San Francisco Gate, one of the speculations made is with regards to Dobbs involvement with the Federation for American Immigration Reform [FAIR]; FAIR has been recently labeled as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Taking notice of Dobbs involvement was Media Matter boss Eric Burns, who went after Dobbs in a letter written to CNN President John Klein.

“Mr. Dobbs represents an ongoing threat to CNN's credibility as a serious news organization, in no small part because of his polemical coverage of immigration issues and his continued use of his CNN show to lend prominence to groups such as FAIR. The attention and legitimacy he gave to the "birther" movement - and CNN's condoning of his actions - did real damage to that credibility. His participation in the upcoming FAIR rally would do further, serious damage. We urge you to finally acknowledge that Mr. Dobbs' actions in this and other contexts are inconsistent with the reputation that CNN strives to maintain."

It comes with no surprise that many organizations have been after Dobbs through campaigns and websites such as dropdobbs.com and bastadobbs.com. However, these organizations were not the main reason for his leaving.

One of the main reasons for his retirement is due to continuous conflict in the past between Dobbs and CNN executives.

Leaving CNN this past Wednesday, Dobbs leaves behind his beginnings from a business journalist to a narrow-minded reporter. As stated by Dobbs, he will seek new opportunities elsewhere. While working for CNN, Dobbs was also host of a radio show and as permitted by CNN, was released immediately from his CNN contract. Dobbs will continue on the radio show, but his new role has not yet been released.

However, these new opportunities still remain unclear and uncertain.

With many of the hysterical assumptions made of Dobbs’ future, is the possibility that he may become a third party candidate for the 2012 presidential campaign. [YEAH, MY ASS…]

Replacing Dobbs is "CNN political reporter and anchor, John King,” he who does not give personal opinions when reporting.

Finally, Lou Dobbs is out of the television screens. Let’s keep it that way… and hopefully, there will consequently be a decline in his radio show.

CHANGING THE IMMIGRATION APPROACH

With the Obama administration in place, new strategies have begun to set-in when dealing with immigration. Instead of dealing with employee deportations, they are going after employers.

The first case to take place, due to this new approach will take place in Minnesota.

Last month, after immigration officials performed a review of the company, American Building Maintenance CO., about 1,200 employees abandoned their jobs. The employees were not held by law and instead, were allowed to go home.

This Minnesota company is under continuous supervision.

As a result of the actions by federal officials, immigrant workers are left with economic struggles. According to employees and company personnel, many of the unemployed workers are selling their cars and home, living off saving and/or asking for loans from friends and other family members.

Many of these immigration workers, who have families to take care, must not go unnoticed. It is important to see their struggles and the government needs to reflect on that.

IMMIGRATION HERE WE GO!

Now that the Health Care Reform has passed, it is time to move on to another heating debate. Politicians had argued that they could not move onto immigration without first dealing with the health care system. SO IT IS NOW THE TIME TO FIX THE IMMIGRATION SYSTEM...

and that means... YES for Immigration Reform... Giving people the chance to that American Dream...

THE NEO-NAZI GROUPS CONTINUE...

Today Saturday, Nov. 7 the Neo-Nazi or "National Socialist Movement" group marched in Phoenix, Arizona against illegal immigration. Among the general ideals of the neo-nazi protestors, they argued that their country needs to be taken back. "We're losing our entire nation. We're being genocided out of our own nation, and we're saying we're taking a stand today and we're taking America back," said J.T. a member of the anti movement.
Counter protestros were also heavily present. Fighting against this hate group and movement. Fernie Ramos, a counter protestor said that this type of hate needs to be fought back because America is learning to accept.

FRIDA KAHLO... BORDERLINE...

While in the U.S. with her husband, Frida Kahlo painted this self-portrait depicting a human border, that separates both the United States and Mexico. In a strong response to her disappointment and unhappiness with the U.S., Frida Kahlo demonstrates the beauty of a country found south of the border. Meanwhile, the U.S. is buried in smoke and industrialization. In this 1932 self-portrait, we can readily observe the significance of the standing border that creates separation.

NEW HAVEN, CONN... IMMIGRATION ON THE SPOTLIGHT

In a report released by the Associated press, ten New Haven residents have placed an immediate lawsuit against federal officials.

The situation or conflict, is that federal officials conducted an immigration raid against a New Haven program that would provide I.D. cards for any resident regardless of their immigration status.

The lawsuit was presented today, Wednesday, and through e-mail sources demonstrates the "hostility to the I.D. card program."

THE CUT FOR LOU DOBBS

Time after time, the news network CNN has allowed for the continuous hate remarks of “journalist” Lou Dobbs. He defends his argument by saying “if we report it, it’s fact.” His argument against “ALIENS” invading this country is that they have “leprosy” and are putting the health of Americans at risk. His arguments are beyond exaggerated and absurd. For more information please visit the following web site and stop this so-called journalist from instilling fear in Americans.

CAPITOL HILL, VISITED BY IMMIGRATION ADVOCATES

Today in Washington, thousands of people lobbied and rallied for a complete immigration reform.

The advocates for the comprehensive immigration reform said they hope Obama will soon leave the shadows of the topic and start acting on his stated commitment to a reform. An immediate call to action on immigration was the main objective of the event.

The attendees reinforced the idea that reform is immediately needed to legalize people and stop the separation of families.

CHANGES FOR DETENTION CENTERS

On Tuesday Oct. 6, the Obama administration will be releasing an outline that will set various changes for the immigration detention centers.

The plan is to determine “whom to lock up and for how long based on the danger and flight risk posed by detainees.” The detention centers are being revised in order to raise standards and make changes that were last done during the Bush administration.

These changes are being implented due to the poor health and medical treatment, and the inability to access services, “such as phones to speak with lawyers.”

LATE NIGHT FUNNIES: Robot Chicken

IMMIGRATION SPOILS OLYMPICS FOR CHICAGO

On Friday Oct. 2, 2009 after the disappointing news that Chicago, Illinois had lost the Olympic bid, the broken Immigration laws came back to bite us.

The NY Daily News reported that the bid was lost because of the complicated Immigration system in the United States. “A member of the International Olympic Committee from Pakistan,” Syed Shaid Ali said that the U.S. lost some of “its juice as a destination for foreign tourists."

Ali noticed that the ability for foreigners to enter the U.S. would be an upsetting “experience.”

President Obama responded by saying that, “America at its best is open to the world” and along with the “White House and State Department,” he would try to make the process easier for international visitors.

The loss of the Chicago Olympic bid is a “victim of America’s Broken Immigration System,” as stated by the Immigration Policy Center. President Obama said that “the U.S. is open for business, but our nation’s actions have proved quite the opposite.”

This outcome should serve as an indication that an immigration reform law needs to be promptly discussed and approved.

We'll be watching the 2016 Summer Olympics live from Rio De Janeiro!

"WHO WINS, WHO LOSES" REPORT & OPINION

On Wednesday Sept. 30, 2009, the Latino/Latina Roundtable hosted the “Who Wins, Who Loses” immigration panel at the Lady of our Assumption Church in Claremont, CA.

The evening welcomed over 100 guests, bringing together a diverse group of people. The discussion panel was opened by Angela Zambrano, an organizer for the Pomona Habla [Speaks] Coalition who reinforced the importance of an immigration reform. Zambrano said, “It is important that we understand the debate…and [that] our communities don’t end up being the losers [in the immigration issue]”. The evening speakers were introduced; Angelica Salas, director of the Coalition for Humane Immigration Rights of Los Angeles [CHIRLA] and Esther Lopez, director of the United Food and Commercial Workers Civil Rights and Community Action Department.

Salas clarified that “[immigration] reform” is the “legalization [of immigrants] with a path to citizenship.” As a director for CHIRLA, Salas said that “[they] are fighting for the laws that keep families together…which make communities stronger.” They are also fighting for immigrant workers and access to higher education for undocumented students. Salas believes that “it is about creating community power” and the ability to communicate with our leaders so that they become supporters of an immigration reform.

During the intersession my friend and journalism colleague Cesar S., and I approached a woman who had been acting suspicious all evening. We had been told that this woman and her company of people were from the minutemen. From the beginning, this woman tried to intimidate the audience by photographing the audience continuously, walking around and recording videos. In the short interview she introduced herself as Robin Hvidston. She has a B.A. in English, and is a protestant Christian. Conducting the questions, Cesar S. asked what organization she represented. Hvidston said, “I am a grassroots worker for the We Are the People…coalition” and said no more. Arriving at home, I decided to really figure out who this woman is. Hvidston, a resident of Upland, CA, is a representative for the minutemen, a co-founder and director of the FIRE Coalition, a national Rally Coordinator for the minutemen, and other numerous titles of anti-immigration groups. People refer to Hvidston as a "great American."

It is with great disappointment that this Christian woman would work for such organizations. Growing up in the Christian church they always preached about welcoming people, about accepting them and uniting them for the glorification of God. The church also teaches its members not to lie or hate other; the scriptures say that one should love their neighbor. This is a Christian woman that believes in the separation of families, the deportation of hundreds of people who struggle day to day and the unequal access to “the American dream”. She said that “Mexico should fix their own internal problems.” From first hand knowledge, she does not understand what goes on in Mexico. Like any other third world country, there is tremendous corruption that does not allow for the advancement of its citizens. Their politicians are overwhelming concerned with becoming wealthy and powerful. Feeling deceived, I strongly believe that people need to begin to practice what they preach and not lie.

Based on an actual event and personal opinion.

2010... JUST IN CASE...

In an interview conducted by the Associated Press on Friday Sept. 25, Thomas Saenz, “president and general council of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund” said he anticipates to work in immigration law next year, along side congress. He says that if Democrats make any delays with regards to immigration reform, “Congress should” break immigration down into smaller sections or groups.
Saenz said, “Lawmakers [should] address the need for foreign agricultural workers, provide legal status to high school graduates brought to the country illegally as children, and create equity for same sex partners who want to come to the U.S. or get green cards.”

Saenz is convinced that as of right now a “comprehensive immigration reform cannot move in 2010” and needs to start moving. As the immigration issue heats up, Obama himself faces pressure, from the nation and also from Latinos. According to Saenz, the support of Latinos voters given to Obama is “in critical states.”

Saenz calls for an immediate fix in the areas of “Immigration and Customs Enforcements…[the] Homeland Security Department, and suspending agreements that allow local and state law enforcement to enforce immigration laws,” all which have concluded in “civil right abuses… [and] racial profiling.”

BOOST ON IMMIGRATION SERVICE/FILING FEES

As reported by the Associated Press, the federal government has once again entered discussion about raising the fees for applications on “immigration-related services to help offset a shortage in revenue.”

Their solution according to Alejandro Mayorkas, director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, is that the Los Angeles agency might cut costs, raise fees or reorient “revenue in the next two years to alleviate the problem.”

The decrease in revenue is mainly due to the economic crisis, which has caused an increasing drop in application filing related to immigration. This fiscal year, the Citizenship and Immigration services will not meet its revenue predictions, collecting $282 million instead of $2.33 billion.

Alejandro Mayorkas did not state to what amount the fees will be raised “or which services will be affected.”

Immigration Conspiracy Hits Virginia

Today Friday, September 18, 2009, an Immigration conspiracy has hit the State of Virginia. A 30 year old woman by the name of Beth Ann Broyles of Evanston, Illinois pledged guilty due to “ conspiracy, visa fraud, tax evasion” and the bringing of “ALIENS” to come work in the U.S., with H2B Visas [abut 1,000 “ALIENS” brought from Europe and Jamaica]. Her recent sentence has been 87 months of prison.

Broyles is an immigration attorney from Chicago and an immigration counsel for the “Viktar Krus Organization in Virginia Beach.” The corruption of the Krus organization generated $35 million gross income in a 6 year span, form 2003-2009. The Krus foundation had been under watch since August 2007 by numerous task forces such as ICE and the United States Dept. of Labor.

Broyles’s sentencing will take place on December 14, with a projected five year imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, “full restitution, a special assessment, and three years of supervised release.”

Immigration and Health Care Explode

As the Health Care Reform issue continues to burn in the flames of controversy, it quickly has set the issue of Immigration on fire. As the controversy grows, a radio talk show hosts an anti-immigration/health care reform “radiothon” called “Hold Their Feet to the Fire.” The marathon comes to an end in the U.S. capital today, which hosted 40 conservative speakers. The buzz behind this event is that it is considered to be RACIST. Another problem with this is that the sponsor, the Federation for American Immigration Reform [FAIR] says to have connections with hate groups.

I went on ahead and tried to really see who this Federation for American immigration Reform is. Please do not be confused, this non-profit organization does not support immigrants, it states in its web site, “(we are an) organization of concerned citizens who share a common belief that our nation's immigration policies must be reformed to serve the national interest.” In the article “The New Nativism,” it states that the FAIR “has also received $180,000 in grants from the Pioneer Fund.” The Pioneer Fund “is a U.S. non-profit foundation established in 1937 ‘to advance the scientific study of heredity and human differences’.” This organization works towards the hypothesis of IQ variations among races.

Please listen to the interview of two of “Hold Their Feet to the Fire” hosts, “Armstrong Williams of XM Radio and Roger Hedgecock of KOGO in San Diego.” The interview takes a hilarious twist, as the interview host presents Roger Hedgecock as an “African American.” He is immediately insulted and answers “AM I?” The woman hosting the interview chuckles and responds, “At least that is what I’ve been led to believe”. I found his response funny but that is another topic not in my interest to cover.
